Welcome to AZ MorgansWhen I was suddenly able to retire, sooner than expected, I knew the time was right to pursue my dream of becoming a serious breeder of Morgan horses. The type of horse that I loved and admired, was the original, old-style classic Morgan. The originals were amazing animals: generally cob size (large pony to small horse), with good bone, short coupling, well sloped shoulders, strong hind-quarters, powerful, up-right neck, and small, lovely expressive head with large eyes. They were not just beautiful, but athletic, versatile, intelligent and kind. Comfortable and pleasant under saddle, with great agility, they were showy and forward in harness and could actually out-work many of the much larger draft breeds. Unfortunately, many of the modern Morgans bear little resemblance to my personal ideal. I'd seen so many who appeared to have lost all Morgan type, both in conformation and temperament. Too many were, tall, narrow. long-backed, plain-headed, and just plain nuts! But I knew the old type still existed: those special horses who could "do it all", and be the wonderful, all-around family, competition, and pleasure horse that I loved. As a life-long horseman, I have owned Morgan horses for the past 18 years. It was back then that I acquired my first registered Morgan, a mare of the old type, named Summerhill Tiama. Since then I have owned, bred, bought and sold many Morgans, but my dear old "Ti" is still with me and still producing outstanding foals (15 to date!). She is my original Morgan and foundation mare.....a grand old lady.... I knew I wanted to breed exceptional examples of these wonderful classic Morgans, so I went looking for a stallion. The horse I found, Nordic Black Hawk, has exceeded all my expectations.
I found Hawk in March of 2004, hitched with a draft mare to an Amish manure spreader. A friend hadtold me about a really nice stallion who was for sale, so I went to see the farmer. I asked him to see the horse, and he said "there he is". Hed been so quiet I hadn't even given him a good look, and of course had not expected to see him working in a team with a mare! I was impressed. When the harness came off and I saw the horse underneath, I bought him on the spot. I swallowed hard to do it......I'd never paid so much for a horse in my life! But I knew he was special. When I brought him home, a friend of mine who has been involved for many years with breeding, training and showing Andalusian horses, saw him and instantly fell in love with him. She began to push me to get him in the show ring, something I'd never done and hadn't even considered. In 2005 Hawk and I made our debut in the show ring. Showing mainly in driving, but also some halter and a few under saddle classes. In fact he won his first blue, at his first show, in a green horse under saddle class! He has been outstanding in driving classes, earning a Reserve Champion Driving award at Brookfield , OH at his 3rd show. He also showed in the Penn-Ohio Morgan show with a 2nd in halter and in several driving classes where he placed well against season competition. After a late start joining the NW Pa Riding and Driving club, Hawk has become a serious competitor (placing mostly 1st, 2nd or 3rd) in Pleasure driving, Obstacle driving, and Reinsmanship, against the friendly but fierce competion. His apppearances at the shows never fail to bring compliments on his beauty and wonderful disposition. Next year we plan to add
regular appearances in Western Pleasure, Hunt seat and other under saddle
classes. This horse really can "do it all"! And last, but most
important, Hawk's foals began arriving this year. His three foals from
my mares, as well as several others from outside mares, have been everything
I could have hoped for.
